Somewhere over China
Somewhere over China
Between my two trips to China I heard a song by Jimmy Buffet called “Somewhere Over China”. Having just returned from an adventure, the song resonated with me and does so each time I travel.
We always return home from our travels a little different than when we left. Each trip enlarges our recognition of the world around us in the real sense that we have first hand experience of new places and people. Sometimes we return fresh and energized from our excursion and, given a brief respite, are ready to venture out once more. On other occasions we return having spent all our energies and want nothing more than home and a good book. We always have a new perspective however.
Each time we set out, we cut the ties of the familiar and start out on a new voyage of discovery (thank you Lewis and Clark) safe in the assumption that we will happily return. I’m not sure we would go if we thought differently.
Today we spent time looking for grave-markers of Lydia’s ancestors in Elsberry, Missouri. I get a bit lost in all the connections, but she seems to have found some of the information she was searching to find. More importantly, she was able to walk the same ground as her fore bearers and so connect with the past in a visceral way. It was an important day for her.
Tomorrow we fly home, a little different, a little more knowledgeable.
Blessings
