Plans Change
Summer heat arrived without much introduction. Like getting old, it just showed up and stayed. The humidity came with it, so even the shade is hot. We’d been “in between” for a few weeks…moved out of our old house and living in an apartment until the new house is ready…when all of a sudden: “when all of a sudden: is an expression we used to insert on each- others conversations to hurry dialogue along. One of us would begin to relate a story, and to hurry our familiar ramblings along, the other would interject “when all of a sudden”. It was both a touch of humor and familiarity.
So, we were in between life changes, reflecting on our 36 years in the old house and trying to imagine the next stage of life. We had settled in the apartment on a temporary basis. It was a lull. A pause. A deep breath.
WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN; plans changed, the house was completed early. So, we signed papers, arranged for movers, and reserved a motel room. Tomorrow night we stay in the motel while the movers pack us up and get us shifted to our new home. If everything goes as planned, we sleep in our new home on Thursday. Note the ‘goes as planned’ phrase. The one thing we’ve learned about life is that nothing ever goes as planned. So we keep, in the back of our minds, the idea that there is truly no plan, only a flow of events in which we spin, circle, bump. I think we make plans to give us a sense of order, even if we know it’s false.
So, all of a sudden, we have entered the third phase of our life together, Lyd and I in our forever house. We’ll settle in without gutters to clean or lawns to mow. A time to rest, reflect, and enjoy. Or at least that’s the plan.
Blessings
Good to hear you are finally getting into your new house! I’m sure it will be “home” in no time.
